I downloaded a "free" converter but it looks like the conversion will take over two hours on a regular length movie. Am I doing something wrong?

To make it go faster either get a more powerful CPU or use a program that can let the GPU chip in and help. Its called GPU acceleration

I always use wondershare video converter to convert mp4 to avi video. It takes about 30 minutes to convert a two hours long mp4 video. I think the conversion speed is fast, and here is a guide about how to use it
