The pitches are designed for bowlers, not for batsmen. This was seen in T20 match too, where India decided to bat first. So based on such pitches, India should select to field first because conditions play in favor of team fielding first.
Ricky Ponting is actually master of the Jedi Mind trick.
He learnt it from Michael Vaughan at Edgbasten in 2005.
"You will bat."
"Oh I think we’ll have a bat."

Ever since Ganguly decided to field first in World Cup 2003 final and Australia posted 359, Indian team fears to field first in one days against Australia.
Since then whenever India has won toss against Australia in ODI it has always selected to bat first. They have psychological fear that a very large target of 350+ will be put by Australia if they bat first.
However that is not always the case, as nature of pitch may favor bowlers at times.

Indian captain is not more better and clever than Australian’s captain. and experience also isn’t enough to beat aus.

Dhoni selects to bat, believing that Indian batsmen will bat explosively and post 300+ for Australia to chase.
The problem is that its the nature of pitch which decides if high total will be posted or not. Dhoni ignores that fact and does not care to think of it.
So when a toss is won, the captain has to look at all angles. He needs to think what if team doesn’t bat good and should fielding be chosen first.
Most experienced captains from South Africa, Newzealand, or even Windies captain Lara used to examine the pitch one day before the game. Does Dhoni do that? I don’t think so.

It does not matter. The toss is irrelevant. Even if India fields first, it would still face a very tough challenge — to chase 300+ or even 350 around targets. As it is Hayden, Symonds, Gilchrist know and read their pitches and wickets much better than Indian batsmen do. Hence the Aussie batsmen know how to exploit conditions, which most Indians seem to lack because they are not used to playing on bouncy or high speed pitches.
Also India tours Australia once every 4 years so they have very little experience or exposure to cricket on Australian continent.
So whether India bats first or fields first, it would not make any difference at all. The batting line up would still collapse regardless of the fact that it chases or bats first.

While decision to bat first today was debatable as rain was round the corner, batting first will be advantageous as the batsmen can play freely without any tension as compared to batting second and lchasing a big score. if the team batting first and put up a challenging score, the team batting second will be under lot of pressure to chase the target.
